SPOLETO A TREASURE TROVE OF ART, HISTORY AND NATURE

Why visiting Spoleto, you ask?

Spoleto is a wonderful Umbrian town in the province of Perugia of ancient origins. Here art, history, culture and events are inextricably intertwined with everyday life. This city is able to offer wonderful stays because everything that is there and takes place there, originates from the past.

Spoleto

The name of the city gives the most curious travelers a story to tell. In fact, the name derives from the Greek Spao and Lithos, which translated means “detached stone”. Legend has it that the hill on which Spoleto stands, Colle del Sole, was formed by the landslide of Mount Monteluco. The city of Spoleto is full of places to visit. Tourists will be spoiled for choice. Even just seeing its alleys gives great emotions, such is the beauty of this town.

Tourist Attractions

The most popular stop is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, also known as the Cathedral of Spoleto. Built in 1607, on the ruins of an old church of the 9th century, it is embellished with frescoes by Pinturicchio in the Chapel of Bishop Eroli.

Another place to see in Spoleto is the church of San Salvatore, dating back to the 4th-5th century and retouched by the Lombards in the 8th century. It is one of the most significant examples of early Christian art and became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2011.

For those who love unique things we recommend the Church of Sant’Eufemia, dating back to the twelfth century, of which only mosaics and walls remain, but it is the only Italian example of Romanesque church architecture with women’s galleries.

Also not to be missed is the Church of San Gregorio Maggiore.

The Rocca Albornoziana is very marvelous, a castle that stands at the top of the Sant’Elia hill. The fortress has two internal courtyards and six towers, including the one called the “pint room”, because it is finely frescoed with paintings dating back to 1400.

Also worth seeing is the Ponte Sanguinario, so called because it is located near a Roman amphitheater where Christians were martyred. The Roman amphitheater complex is located north of Spoleto and extends for 10,000 square meters.

Spoleto is surrounded by lush nature and it will not be difficult even for the trekking enthusiast to discover and follow the many paths that cross it.
